There's really no need for a 2.1 soundbar to get anything > 2.1 channels. If you know that the Xbox supports lossless decode, I would just set it to decode to stereo and forget about it. The xbox will give it your DTS-HD MA 5.1 bitstream, then the soundbar might use the lossy DTS core and decode it to a lossy 2.0 PCM to play. The problem sometimes lies with a device which does not support the HD codecs but has the ability to decode them using the lossy side-mux or core stream. If your Xbox supports decoding of the codecs, you can set it to decode so that it will decode and downmix, and then send the lossless PCM stream to your soundbar. If your soundbar or tv supports the HD codecs, your player can send a bitstream (the exact audio in) to the sound bar, and it will be decoded and mixed down to 2 channels there. The decoding can happen in the player, receiver, tv, or sound bar, assuming that the device supports that codec. When playing back audio, if not in PCM, the audio stream needs to be decoded. These are backwards compatible with devices that support DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD, the additional stream metadata will just be tossed away. It says where in the 3D space the sounds should come from for additional height and surround channels. The also have the lossy versions of the codecs (DTS, Dolby Digital) as a core stream or side-mux.ĭTS:X and Dolby Digital (TrueHD) Atmos are the same lossless codecs as above, but with additional stream data which has object-based sound information. It is lossless.ĭTS and Dolby Digital are lossy compressed codecs which can do up to 5.1 (and sometimes more).ĭTS-HD MA and Dolby Digital TrueHD are lossless codecs which can do up to 7.1. PCM is another audio codec which is not licensed, and is basically a lowest common denominator which all TVs, AVRs, and sound bars will understand. /r/AverageJoeAudiophile for Two Channel Audio - DAC's Turntables, etc.ĭolby and DTS are companies which create audio codecs and license them for use. When requesting help for issues POST DETAILS, MODELS, & PICS.Many questions have already been answered, USE SEARCH & See FAQ's.Messaging Mods via their private inbox not via mod mail will result in a ban and your messages ignored.
